Many skin changes, such as skin cancer, wrinkles, and age spots, are caused by exposure to the sun. These are because the damage caused by the sun is permanent.

Sun exposure and changes in the skin
The two types of sun rays that can cause skin damage are ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB). UVA rays affect the deep layers of the skin. UVBs damage the outer layers of the skin and cause burns.

The best way to reduce the risk of skin changes is to protect the skin from the sun. This includes the use of filters or sunscreens and other protective measures.

Avoid exposure to the sun, particularly during the hours of 10 am to 4 pm, when UV rays are strongest.
Remember that the higher the altitude, the faster your skin burns with sun exposure. Also, early in the summer is when UV rays can cause the most damage to the skin.
Use protection from the sun, even on cloudy days. Clouds and fog do not protect it from the sun and may even intensify UVB rays.
Avoid surfaces that reflect light, such as water, sand, concrete, snow, and areas painted white.
DO NOT use sun lamps or tanning beds (tanning salons). Spending 15 to 20 minutes in a tanning salon is as dangerous as spending a day in the sun.
Protective clothing against the sun
Adults and children should wear clothing to protect the skin from the sun, in addition to sun block or sunscreen. Suggestions for clothing include:

Long-sleeved shirts and long pants. Look for loose fabrics, unbleached, of tightly woven fabric. The more dense the fabric, the more protection the garment will offer.
A wide-brimmed hat that can shade the entire face from the sun. A baseball cap or visor does not protect the ears or the sides of the face.
Special clothes that protect the skin absorbing UV rays.
Sunglasses that block UVA and UVB rays (for anyone over one year).
Guidelines for sunscreens
It is important not to rely on sunscreen only to protect yourself from the sun. Using it is also not a reason to spend more time in the sun.

The best sunscreens to choose from include:

Protection against the sun
Sunscreens that filter both UVA and UVB rays. These products are labeled as broad spectrum.
Sunscreen with sun protection factor (SPF) label of 30 or more. This number indicates how well the product protects the skin against damage from UVB rays.
Those that are resistant to water, even if their activities do not include swimming. This type of sunblock stays on your skin longer when the skin is wet.
Avoid products that combine sunscreen and insect repellent. Sunscreen should be reapplied frequently. Insect repellent applied too often can be harmful.

If your skin is sensitive to chemicals in sunscreen products, choose a mineral sunscreen such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.

Less expensive products that have the same ingredients work just as well as expensive ones.

When applying sunscreen:

Use it every day when you are outdoors, even for a short time.
Apply it 30 minutes before going outdoors to get better results. This gives the blocker time to absorb it.
Remember to use sunscreen during the winter.
Apply a large amount in all exposed areas. This includes your face, nose, ears and shoulders. DO NOT forget your feet.
Follow the packaging instructions on how often you should reapply it. Normally this should be done at least every two hours.
Always reapply after swimming or sweating.
Use a lip balm with sunscreen.
Children and protection from the sun
When in the sun, children should be well covered with clothing, sunglasses and hats. Also, they should stay away from the sun during the hours of maximum sunlight.

Sunscreens are safe for most small children and older children. Use products that contain zinc and titanium, since they have fewer chemicals that can irritate young skin.

DO NOT use sunscreens on babies younger than 6 months without first checking with your doctor or pediatrician.
